Eligibility

Under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Act, students and families are considered homeless and eligible for special rights if they are: - Living in a shelter, motel, vehicle, campground, on the street, in a 24-hour restaurant, or bus station - Displaced due to a natural or manmade disaster (flood, earthquake, fire) - Living in a motel, abandoned building, trailer or other inadequate accommodations - Staying with friends or relatives because they cannot find affordable housing ("doubled-up") - An unaccompanied youth, such as a teenager living on their own ("couch surfing")

Description

May provide support services for homeless families and students, including unaccompanied youth, to help ensure educational stability and access. Services may include: - Assistance with school enrollment, even when required documents (such as birth certificates or immunization records) are missing - Automatic eligibility for free school meals, when available, without requiring completion of additional forms - Support to help students remain in their school of origin after a move, including moves across school district boundaries when possible - Transportation assistance to and from school, which may include school bus services, gas vouchers, or city bus passes - Provision of free school supplies, as available - Provision of free school clothing, as available - Referrals to additional community resources and services as needed Services may continue through the end of the school year in which homelessness ends.
